1941 LINCOLN ZEPHYR
Much to the chagrin of Henry Ford, Edsel Ford introduced a number of exciting cars that drew a lot of attention to the Ford Motor Company portfolio. One of them was the Lincoln Zephyr, a car positioned between the newly introduced Mercury—another Edsel project—and Lincoln Model K. Competing directly with LaSalle, both filled market gaps for their respective corporations and brought their own brand of styling to the game.
The Zephyr took a lot of styling cues from Ford and Lincoln, fashioned with a sweptback, aerodynamic design that fit the Zephyr’s name perfectly, which came from the Greek name Zephyrus, God of the West Wind. Offering a youthful elegance and sporty charm, the Zephyr enticed a new clientele to the Lincoln brand, a younger buyer not quite ready to settle down yet with something as formal as a Lincoln but one who had advanced in career enough to be earning a paycheck allowing for something more than even the new Mercury.
